Such a juicy, obvious target for mischievous overseas hackers: It was 2008 and attacks had begun mounting on the official Beijing Olympic website.

Wang Zi and his compatriots responded to the threat by gathering data including the web addresses of foreign hackers and their websites. Then they launched their own – completely unofficial – carefully-orchestrated counter-offensive in defense of the Olympic website.

“Based on this data, we supervised the web addresses of these foreign hackers, accessed the packet data on their computers and analyzed whether they did something bad to the official websites of the Beijing Olympic Games,” “Bing’er”, one of Wang Zi’s partners said.

Indeed, he said, they did find some offenders who were trying to hack the official websites. But he refused to divulge details of what response, if any, they had made.

All the highly secretive members of the hong ke society interviewed by the Global Times refused to reveal their true identities and would only agree to speak anonymously via computer chat rooms or instant messaging.

Three times the Global Times applied for membership of their online chat groups. Three times, the Global Times was kicked out of the forum. But finally the manager of the site Wang Zi privately contacted the Global Times asking the exact reasons for wanting to join the group and a detailed explanation of the story plan. After several exchanges, and after installing the relevant software, he and other senior members agreed to a chat room audio interview.

The main reason most agreed to talk was an apparent chance to separate hong ke – or “honker” in Chinglish – in the public mind from common hackers, by referring to their higher calling, a code of honor and the positive influence they exert on a chaotic and complex online world.

“We reorganized ourselves to safeguard all the official websites of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Games of Olympiad (BOCOG) and ensured the smooth operation of the Beijing Olympic Games,” said Wang Zi, a founder of the “union” – actually more like an invitation-only club – of patriotic hackers.

All this work occurred behind a carefully maintained veil of secrecy. The government and BOCOG never had any idea, Wang Zi insisted.

“Hong ke do not seek to make a name for themselves,” he said.

Fresh start

“The Tao that can be described in words is not the true Tao. The Name that can be named is not the true Name,” – the first two sentences of Tao Te Ching are the slogan of hong ke that appear on the new union’s new homepage.

After the Olympics, Wang Zi’s group retired from the web for a short time, and then on the first day of this year, the group made a bold new announcement.

The blurb on their newly-launched website reads, “Hong ke culture is back. We will hold and transmit hong ke spirit focusing on justice, pioneering and love for the motherland.”

Every newcomer must swear an oath to the organization: “I join the hong ke union of my own will … Nothing is more important than the security and will of our motherland … we will safeguard the dignity of our motherland in our special way.”

Wang Zi says his union is a purely non-governmental organization. They could not register the union’s name with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology until they deleted “Zhongguo” (China) from it.

“They do not allow us to use ‘Zhongguo’ in the name, because we are a non-governmental organization that cannot represent China,” said Wang Zi.

Without fanfare, the union has enrolled more than 1,000 members. Worrying people might join for the wrong reasons, the union imposes strict censorship on applicants, and whoever is found to harbor ill purposes – like stealing information off others’ computers – is turned away.

Even registered members are kicked out if they violate the rules. A union member is not allowed to privately test the security of other websites without permission or engage in commercial activities in the name of the hong ke union.

“I will investigate in person any cases involving commercial profit,” Wang Zi said. “Some guys have attempted to lure our management with lucre in order to erode our core power.”

Though he refused to give details of investigations, Wang Zi said five members have already been expelled from the union.

This new style union of today does something they see as the exact opposite of hacking: members locate security holes in domestic websites and then help fix them.

“We inform them of the result in private,” he said. “If we publish the result, evil hackers will exploit and take advantage of these security loopholes.”

Regardless of motives, their actions are wrong and illegal, Fang Binxing, president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, wrote in an e-mail interview with the Global Times

“Hong ke believe they have acceptable motives for entering others’ computer systems, whether it is striking a blow at reactionary forces or locating security vulnerabilities.

“Hacking into other websites without authorization is like breaking down doors to prove a house is vulnerable and attacking reactionary forces is a kind of lynching.”

Questions of authenticity

Others question the new union’s authenticity.

“Lion is the spiritual leader of the hong ke union,” Lin Lin, a leader of hacker group Eviloctal Security Team, told the Global Times. “And without him, no hong ke organization can be regarded as a reorganization of the original.

“They are making use of the fame of the original union.”

Wang Zi admits his site is by no means the only hong ke site out there.

What is the ‘real’ hong ke union is not so important, in Wang Zi’s opinion.

“Actually there is no such thing as an individual hong ke. The word represents a spirit, not a person.”

It’s been nearly five years since the original hong ke union was dissolved by founder “Lion,” who had led Chinese hackers into battles with foreign websites to “safeguard China’s dignity.”

Lion and his followers engaged in a “cyber war” in May 2001 with American hackers who had launched attacks after an American Navy EP-3 surveillance plane was involved in a collision with a Chinese fighter.

US hacker organization “PoizonBOx” had concentrated attacks on Windows systems, and a single hacker “Prophet” attacked Linux systems, according to an article on the ChinaByte website. “PoizonBOx” had reportedly launched 283 attacks on websites whose addresses ended with “.cn”, and “Prophet” had also made 30 successful attacks.

A few days later, Chinese hong ke led by Lion’s union and other hacker organizations conducted “counter-attacks”, altering the homepages of US websites. By May 7, 2001, 1,600 US websites had fallen victim, including more than 900 governmental and military websites. More than 1,100 Chinese websites suffered the same fate, according to Min Dahong’s article, “Say Goodbye to the Years of Passion of Chinese Hackers.”

As Wang Zi said, “Though a war does no good to any country, it safeguards the country’s dignity.”

Not everyone sees it Wang’s way.

“Hackers attacked foreign websites just the same as some students threw stones or ink bottles at the US embassy in China,” Min said after the cyber war. “They were venting their emotions, not attacking.”

Min declined to be interviewed by the Global Times. He wrote in his article that the Chinese government does not allow any organization or individual to attack the web in any way for any reason.

After the cyber war ended in 2001, People’s Daily published a scathing commentary pointing out that whether hacker or hong ke, any attack or destruction to a website is an “inexcusable violation of law.”

On the last day of 2004, Lion published an open letter on the union’s website declaring its dissolution. He claimed he had “lost the passion” and was “unwilling to carry the can for other hackers who sought commercial interests in the name of the hong ke union.”

Police crackdown

The largest hacker organization in China, fifth in the world, had lasted just four years. Yet within a year of that dissolution, a core member of the original union hong ke tried to restart the union, an anonymous member told the Global Times.

After successfully organizing “counter attacks” on Japanese websites in May, the organization was shut down and some members “were caught by the police,” the source told the Global Times.

Although many fans mourned the death of the original union in 2004, insiders mostly felt the opposite, according to Min Dahong. The professor of the Institute of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences pointed out in his article that it was not a bad idea to dissolve the hong ke union. Real hong ke should focus on improving their technical skills, he suggested.

Lion wrote that only three members in total were capable of technical support. Wang Zi reported in his online blog that of the claimed “80,000” hackers that participated in the famous “cyber war” of 2001, most knew nothing about networking and they attacked through obsolete methods like junk mails or “pings”.

“Skilled hackers are able to program commands and use them to attack, but at present many ‘hackers’ just download hacker tools from the Internet,” Fang told the Global Times’ Chinese edition in an interview in May.

Last year 53,000 websites were attacked and 60,000 the year before last, Fang said, without reportedly indicating which websites or what region.

“Skilled hackers are still rare in China,” “yufeicn”, a top management member of the new hong ke union told the Global Times, “We should focus on learning and research.”

The union has set up a learning section on their website on which they have uploaded learning materials and opened online chat groups for members to communicate their experiences. Every Friday, they offer free online audio lessons on network security. Members who do a good job in popularizing cyber knowledge are awarded virtual “medals of honor”.

“Our focus has shifted to popularizing cyber knowledge and safeguarding network security,” Wang Zi said.

The union’s ultimate objective is to master cutting-edge technology and contribute to world network security.

“Network security is actually borderless,” he said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday ended a four-day trip to Africa that took him to Egypt, Nigeria, Namibia and Angola.

The tour was highlighted by the signing of a series of documents ranging from a strategic cooperation pact to energy deals.

Medvedev’s visit, the second by a Russian president to sub-Saharan Africa, sent a signal to the world that Russia is striving to regain the influence it had on the resource-rich continent before the collapse of the Soviet Union.

ECONOMIC TIES

Medvedev, with a delegation of officials and businessmen in tow, seems to have focused his trip on helping Russian firms that have lagged behind their western peers in the pursuit of a bigger business presence on the natural resources laden continent.

Egypt, the first stop on Medvedev’s trip, is Russia’s largest trade partner among the four countries he visited. Trade volume between the two countries was 1.7 billion U.S. dollars last year, and the number of Egypt-bound Russian tourists reached 1.8 million in 2008, the Kremlin said.

During his visit to Cairo, Medvedev and his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak signed a strategic partnership treaty that specifies the main areas of bilateral cooperation, including a planned free trade zone between the two countries.

The Russian president also called for expanded commercial ties, saying projects in the energy field, high-tech industries and outer space are promising.

Energy cooperation topped Medvedev’s agenda in Nigeria as Gazprom, Russia’s state gas monopoly, had been picked as a core investor in the exploration of the African country’s gas reserves.

Gazprom and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. signed documents on establishing a joint venture. Boris Ivanov, head of Gazprom International, said the venture would invest up to 400 million dollars to build a 360 km pipeline from the southern Niger Delta to northern Nigeria, with construction beginning next year.

“Gazprom still wants to buy all gas produced around Europe and resell it on its own terms,” said Mikhail Korchemkin, head of the East European Gas Analysis, a U.S.-based consultancy.

As a business model, re-exporting African gas does not make sense, but geopolitical motivations play a part there, said Korchemkin, suggesting that Russia intends to reinforce its grip on Europe’s energy supply.

In a move to boost Russian investment in Namibia, Gazprombank signed a deal with the national oil company Namcor, pledging to finance the construction of a gas power plant that would export electricity to South Africa.

Russia’s Federal Fisheries Agency and Namibia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Sea Resources also signed a memorandum of understanding, under which Russian fishermen would be allowed in the waters off Namibia, one of the biggest fish exporters in Africa.

Medvedev’s last leg was Angola, which currently holds the presidency of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

Russia’s state diamond monopoly Alrosa has already started a branch in the Angolan capital of Luanda. Apart from cooperation on diamond mining,

Medvedev promised to help Angola modernize industries such as manufacturing and telecommunication, and launch an Angolan telecom satellite called “AngoSat.”

MIDEAST PEACE PROCESS

Although Medvedev’s trip to Africa might be driven by a desire to boost economic ties, the political significance of the visit should never be neglected.

The visit came on the heels of U.S. President Barack Obama’s visit to Egypt. Obama delivered a keynote speech at Cairo University during the trip and vowed to find a fair solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The region has already rocked by mass protests over the Iranian presidential elections, making Medvedev’s visit to the regional power broker “extremely timely,” The Moscow Times quoted Yevgeny Satanovsky, director of the Institute of Middle Eastern Studies, as saying.

Medvedev and Mubarak “spent quite some time” during the visit discussing conflicts in the Middle East, in particular continuing the Russian push for a peace conference to be held in Moscow by the end of this year.

“Russia is exerting its best efforts to resume the peace talks in the Middle East according to the two-state solution and freezing settlements,” Medvedev said after talks with Mubarak, who hailed

Russia as “one of the greatest countries in the world and has clout on the Middle East peace process.”

Russia is a member of the International Quartet that is intent on resolving the Middle East conflict. The Quartet, which also includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations, endorsed the Roadmap that calls on Israel and the Palestinians to take a series of steps ending with Palestinian statehood.

Meanwhile, Medvedev, in his first visit to the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, said he welcomes all Arab countries to attend the international peace conference in Moscow.

“Lasting security can not be achieved in the Middle East without just and comprehensive compromise to the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Medvedev said.

“This comprehensive compromise has to end up with establishing an independent Palestinian state living in peace with all nations in the region including Israel, with its capital in East Jerusalem,” he stressed.

Medvedev proposed in January a Middle East peace conference to be held in Moscow in the first half of 2009.

The proposal was welcomed by Palestinians and Arabs, but was rejected by the United States and Israel, which were concerned with Russia’s alleged engagement with militant Hamas and its military aid to the moderate Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

Neither Medvedev nor Obama unveiled any sensational initiatives, but both reiterated the well-known stances of their countries on the Middle East peace process, said Maria Appakova, a commentator with the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

“The Russian policy in the Middle East cannot be more balanced than it already is,” and the key is what will happen if Moscow and Washington coordinate the principles of their Middle East policies, she said.

Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva admitted Monday that the country’s northeast is still a stronghold for the opposition Puea Thai party after it won by-elections in two provinces, local media reported.

Candidates from the Puea Thai party have defeated its rivals in northeastern provinces of Sakon Nakhon and Si Sa Ket in recent parliament by-elections.

The reason that he decided not to visit the northeastern provinces during the by-election campaigns is because he did not want to be the cause of conflicts, not because he was scared of the Puea Thai supporters, the Thai-language INN news agency quoted Abhisit as saying.

When asked former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s phone-in speeches to people in the two northeastern provinces could be the key to the opposition’s back-to-back wins, Abhisit said the reporters should asked the voters themselves.

Referring to the reports of a campaign to gather one million signatures of people to support a petition to His Majesty the Kingto seek a royal pardon for Thaksin, the prime minister insisted the problems of Thaksin should stay within the legal and political process.

Supporters led by the anti-government United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), staged a mass rally at Bangkok’s Sanam Luang to show their support for Thaksin. Core leaders of the UDD vowed to seek royal pardon for the ousted prime minister.

Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in September 2006, in accusation of corruption, and kept in exile since then. He returned to Thailand in February 2008 to face corruption charges, but later fled into exile again and was convicted in absentia.

Tanzania is to conduct its third major labor-oriented demographic survey aiming at reducing poverty in the east African country.

The survey, third edition since 1990, will start in January next year.

More than 18,000 families will be involved in the survey which is expected to shed light on current employment status, poverty indexes as well as nationwide time spent on economic activities.

Of these families to be surveyed, 11,200 families will be chosen from the rural areas whereas the remaining 7,320 families will be chosen from urban centers of the country.

The Tanzanian authorities are paying attention to employment as the jobless rate is rising especially in the rural areas.

“Unemployment rate is increasingly steadily high in rural areas currently standing at 32.9 percent,” said Administration Director of Tanzanian Statistics Department Festo Mhula, “The rate of unemployment in Dar es Salaam has reached 45 percent.”

Tanzania conducted its first labor-oriented survey in 1990 whenit focused on able-bodied individuals and the informal sector.

In 2000, the country conducted a follow-up labor survey that focused on child labor and found out that unemployment rate countrywide was 12.9 percent compared with 5.1 percent globally.

The high unemployment rate is caused by Tanzania’s imbalance between agriculture and industry.

Traditionally an agricultural state, Tanzania lacks formal industries that employ relatively constant labor forces. Most of the farming hands in rural areas are seasonal helpers in harvesting cotton, cashew nuts, coffee beans, sisal leaves and tea leaves.

Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski hinted on Monday his country would hold a referendum on any proposal for solving the name dispute between Macedonia and Greece.

“We strongly recommend a name referendum when there will be some kind of proposal that would be at first acceptable to Greece and then we will see whether it is acceptable to us Macedonians,” Gruevski was quoted by MIA, Macedonia’s official news agency, as saying.

Gruevski said that he couldn’t say whether Macedonia was entering the final stage of talks aimed to settle the long-running name dispute between the two neighbors, wishing things to move in a positive direction.

Representatives of Macedonia and Greece held talks over the name issue on Monday in Geneva under the auspices of UN mediator Matthew Nimetz, which ended without results.

Nimetz will travel to Skopje and Athens at the beginning of next month to continue his efforts to help crack the hard nut that has baffled the two neighbors for the past 18 years.

Athens has been opposed to its neighbor being called the “Republic of Macedonia,” arguing it implies a territorial claim over a Greek northern province also called Macedonia.

Macedonia’s NATO membership was blocked by Greece over the dispute between the two countries in April last year at a NATO summit held in Romania.

CEBU, The Philippines: China and the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) signed an agreement on trade in services here yesterday a major step toward establishing a free trade area (FTA) in the region by 2010.

The deal, which was inked in the presence of Premier Wen Jiabao and 10 ASEAN leaders, will help firms from the Southeast Asian economic bloc gain improved market access to multi-billion dollar service sectors including banking, information technology and tourism.

The agreement “marks a key step forward in building the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and lays the foundation for its full and scheduled completion,” Wen said in a keynote speech yesterday at the 10th ASEAN-China Summit.

Trade between China and the ASEAN states has been booming in the past 15 years it grew more than 20 per cent a year, reaching $160 billion last year. The two sides are each other’s fourth-largest trading partners.

Trade volume will continue to grow by about 20 per cent this year although the possible outbreak of bird flu, natural disasters, regional security and global financial risks could slow the increase, Lu Jianren, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, predicted.

An agreement on merchandise trade took effect in July, 2005, following an early harvest scheme of initial tariff cuts on meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables, fruits and nuts. The services agreement was one of the remaining key items to be finalized in addition to an investment agreement.

Speaking at the summit, Wen called for the acceleration of talks on the investment agreement so as to complete setting up of the FTA by 2010 as planned.

When completed, the China-ASEAN FTA will be the world’s largest, encompassing around 1.7 billion consumers and with total trade estimated at $1.2 trillion.

To promote the building of the FTA, China is ready to speed up discussions and sign a memorandum of understanding on establishing the China-ASEAN Trade, Investment and Tourism Promotion Center, Wen said.

China also proposes ASEAN transport collaboration be strengthened in the next 10 to 15 years to facilitate development of regional transportation and communication.

Wen noted China would enhance cooperation in combating transnational crime, maritime security, disaster reduction and relief, prevention and control of communicable diseases and environmental protection.

Wen was in Cebu to attend a series of East Asian summits that include the 10th ASEAN-China Summit, the 10th ASEAN Plus China, Japan and Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit (”10+3″ Summit) and the 2nd East Asia Summit. He also chaired the 7th Chinese, Japanese and ROK Leaders’ Meeting yesterday.

The Chinese government started to encourage scientists to report difficult academic problems they encounter and compile a data bank of puzzles for future research reference.

The Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences on Thursday asked the country’s top scientists to report their academic “hard nuts,” which are hard to solve but important for scientific developments.

An expert committed made up of 47 academicians will select 100,000 top academic puzzles from 2007 to 2010 and encourage more scientists to engage in research into those subjects in the hope that more breakthroughs might be made.

Barcelona is favorite to maintain their 12-point lead at the top of Spain’s Primera Liga table as the second half of the season kicks off.

Match day 20 marks the first game of the second half of the campaign and Barcelona celebrates it by entertaining the only team to have beaten them in La Liga this season.

Numancia is the visitor at the Camp Nou, but any repeat of that opening day triumph would be a huge surprise. Barcelona has hit its best form since a slow opening to the season and last weekend saw Pep Guardiola’s side defeat Deportivo la Coruna 5-0.

Guardiola rested his star players for the 0-0 Kings Cup draw away to Espanyol on Wednesday, so apart from the injured Rafael Marquez, he should have a full side available on Saturday night.

Real Madrid leads the chasing pack, where all of the sides know they need to keep winning and also hope for Barcelona to slip up.

Real Madrid entertains Deportivo la Coruna, who should be a tougher nut to crack than in the Camp Nou, after Deportivo coach Miguel Angel Lotina complained about his side’s lack of aggression in Barcelona.

Deportivo is without suspended goalkeeper Dani Aranzubia for the game.

Third-placed Sevilla will hope that midweek cup efforts away to Valencia will not leave the side tired for the visit of mid-table Racing Santander, while Valencia could also suffer tired legs for a trip to struggling Mallorca.

Mallorca was also in Cup action during the week, but the team second from bottom of the table will be grateful for the probable absence of Valencia’s top scorer David Villa with a muscle strain.

Fifth-placed Villarreal plays at home to bottom-of-the-table Osasuna on Saturday. Osasuna are still angry at the performance of referee Perez Burrull against Real Madrid last weekend. But they can at least call up winger Juanfran after his suspension was lifted by the Spanish FA.

Elsewhere, there is a battle for a place in the top six as this season’s surprise team, Malaga, receives Atletico Madrid. Malaga is seventh after the club’s best ever first half to a campaign. Atletico beat Malaga 4-0 in the opening game of the season, but Javier Aguirre’s side is currently struggling to find its best form.

Atletico has not won in 2009 and with the pressure on Aguirre growing every game, a defeat could see him sacked as Atletico coach.

Getafe is another team that needs to start hitting form soon. Getafe coach Victor Munoz is another man under pressure and he could be in trouble if his team fails to defeat Sporting Gijon.

Finally Valladolid entertains an Espanyol side that performed well in the Kings Cup under new coach Mauricio Pochettino, Athletic Club Bilbao have a long trip to face Almeria, while there is an Andalusia derby between Recreativo Huelva and Betis.

Many people forget that chocolate comes from a plant, just like all the fruits and vegetables recommended for a healthy heart.

Cocoa beans, chocolate’s main ingredient, are a highly concentrated natural source of flavanol antioxidants, and can play a vital role in daily health-care.

Dark chocolate, in particular, with its blend of rich, delicious, velvety tastes, typically has a higher percentage of cacao solids - cocoa, chocolate liquor and cocoa butter - than milk chocolate.

“More than a to-die-for treat, it is the healthiest type because of the higher cocoa content. Dark chocolate with its high cocoa content does have positive effects on health,” says Christian Rast, chief pastry chef of Hilton Shanghai hotel.

“Antioxidants block free radicals that can damage the arterial wall. As well, it is a stimulant to get into a good mood and help to prevent heart attacks,” Rast says.

Rast adds that if the cocoa beans come from one plantation, the taste can be surprisingly different compared with that from other plantations even close by - like wine from different vineyards.

The levels of flavanol antioxidants in chocolate products are almost perfectly correlated with the concentration of natural cocoa in products. In general, the higher the natural cocoa content, the greater the flavanol antioxidant levels, according to a study sponsored by the Hershey Co, the major chocolate manufacturer in North America.

Flavanol antioxidants occur naturally in some plant-based foods, such as tea, grapes, blueberries, cranberries and cocoa beans. Cocoa beans are the basic ingredient of all chocolate products. Interestingly, it is one of the most concentrated natural sources of flavanol.

“In their protection of body cells, the antioxidants transfer free radicals that develop on the walls of blood vessels and can cause cancer, aging and atherosclerosis,” Rast says. “It is known that the antioxidant concentration is higher in dark chocolate than in food like grapes, nuts and green tea.”

Dark chocolate has better antioxidant properties as well. Antioxidants are compounds that help neutralize free radicals and protect the body against their destructive effects, which means that it can protect the heart and arteries from oxidative damage, similar to the rust that develops on metal over time.

A standard serving of dark chocolate (40 grams) provides more antioxidant power than the standard servings of many other well-known antioxidant-containing foods, including blueberries, walnuts and raisins.

Scientists are still investigating how antioxidant values in foods relate to antioxidant activity in the body, and more research needs to be done to better understand how the body absorbs and uses these antioxidants.

Consumers, when choosing dark chocolate in shops, can first judge from the look. High-quality chocolate usually has a shiny and smooth surface. Secondly, taste is the key. An authentic dark chocolate brings a wonderful feeling as it melts in the mouth. Chewing poor quality chocolate is like chewing gum.

Like everything too much is not good, while a little dark chocolate is good, a lot is not better. Chocolate is loaded with calories and should be enjoyed in moderation. Remember that a balanced diet - and plenty of exercise - is still the key to a good health.
